Environment and Stewardship
The Portland Water District (PWD) is deeply committed to environmental stewardship and sustainability, which are woven into every aspect of our operations and guide how we work and what we do.
Sebago Lake, one of the purest water sources in the nation, serves as the primary drinking water supply for nearly all PWD customers. Protecting this vital resource is at the heart of our mission. Through proactive environmental protection efforts, including land conservation, education, security, monitoring, and direct lake protection measures, PWD ensures the delivery of clean, safe, and fresh drinking water while safeguarding the health of this critical natural resource.
Sustainability is at the core of wastewater management. PWD provides comprehensive wastewater services to several municipalities, preventing pollution and protecting local rivers, lakes, and coastal ecosystems. Our Industrial Pretreatment Program, the largest in Maine, works closely with industries to minimize environmental impacts and preserve water quality.
Every decision we make reflects our dedication to protecting the environment and supporting the communities we serve. Sustainability and environmental stewardship are embedded into our fabric, allowing PWD to actively contribute to a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for the Greater Portland region.
