Capital Projects

The Portland Water District’s ability to deliver water to fire protection systems, homes, and businesses—and to collect and treat wastewater—depends on the efficient and effective operation of its extensive infrastructure. Our current water and wastewater assets are valued at over $300 million. Additionally, the Portland Water District Board of Trustees approves an annual capital improvement plan that invests in water and wastewater infrastructure. These investments are essential to maintaining the reliable, high-quality services our customers expect.

As our communities grow, developers, residents, businesses, and municipalities frequently request public water and wastewater system extensions. It’s important to note that system expansion costs are not funded through water and wastewater rates unless the expansion directly improves current services. Those requesting system extensions to serve new customers are responsible for the associated costs.

Similarly, new construction within our service area must connect to existing water and wastewater systems. Specific guidelines and standards must be followed during the connection process to ensure reliability and proper system functioning.

Through strategic investment and collaboration, the Portland Water District continues to provide dependable service to our community while supporting sustainable growth.
